Dawg Days

Well, now, here’s how strange this week has been. On Monday, I had one dog (Zoni, my 17-year-old Cairn terrier. She’s a little doddery, but she still makes me laugh at least once a day).

On Tuesday, I had a dog, but there was another dog hanging around out in the driveway, but afraid to come up to the house. It was no purebred, but looked to be about half fox terrier and half King Charles spaniel. I tossed him a doggie treat and he woofed at me.

On Wednesday morning, I discovered he had spent the night in the front seat of my car. I let him out and he woofed some more, but lounged on the picnic table until I brought him some food. By nightfall, he had ensconced himself in the house, had proved to be quite polite to both me and Zoni, and so charmed us that we let him sleep on the couch.

On Thursday, I put him out and told him to stay, and drove to town on an errand. When I came back, he was sitting right where I left him. Well, ok, then, I guess it’s time to buy some regular dog food (Zoni gets a special ‘old dog’ kibble). Later I went in to town, got the dog food along with some other groceries, and came home. This time he was nowhere to be seen.

On Friday, I had one dog.

BBC Interview Thursday!

News flash! This just in! (heehee) I’m scheduled to meet Janet Saidi of KBIA-FM, the NPR affiliate in Columbia, Mo. on Thursday for a two-hour interview followed by her attending a Rounders practice session. She will send the interview to the BBC, which will edit and produce for the BBC World Service. It will be featured on their Arts program, and will play worldwide. Holy Hermione!

Back From Memphis

Memphis was fun, educational and a great reminder of why I don’t go out partying anymore. The movie opening was fine, the theater manager was gracious and the audience had good questions, one of them brand new. A fellow who admitted he was living in Memphis and had grown up in Arkansas was so befuddled by the Ozarks dialect in the movie that he asked if we had considered subtitles. Uh, well, we weren’t really fixing to do that, but…

After the movie, we went down to Beale Street to find some food. The quiet upstairs above B.B. King’s was recommended, and surpassed our expectations. But Beale Street was a zoo, with people cued up in lines blocks long waiting to be “frisked” before being allowed on the street. I guess they’ve had some back incidents down there with people thinking (with what part of the brain I don’t know) that it’s appropriate to carry weapons into packed crowds of drunks and disorderliness. Best leave that part of the brain at home, too. In spite of that business, the experience was splendid, made even more so by a tour through the phenomenal National Civil Rights Museum. If you haven’t been, put it on your short list. We all need a reminder now and then of how far we have/have not climbed up civilization’s ladder.

Calling All Angels

Just spent a couple weeks at home, immensely enjoying the mundane. Tomorrow I get to do the dishes and the floors. Wow.

I bet you think I’m being sarcastic. But the road life, while inspiring, does not nourish, and it makes the ordinary very special sometimes.

Recovered now from the Jeff City and Columbia trips, just in time to go to Memphis this weekend to do a Q&A at the Memphis opening, then spend the next day at the National Civil Rights Museum. If you haven’t gone, you’ve missed a very big deal. I’ve been twice, and every time it’s gripping. Going to do a little research while I’m there.

Hey! While you’re waiting for the soundtrack, go to Youtube and call up the Jane Siberry/k.d.lang tribute to Michael Jackson, with Jane’s song, “Calling All Angels.” It’s breathtaking.

Such a sad, gifted spirit.

This Weeks News

Just realized I’m getting behind in my posts, as well as answering your comments. I’ll try to catch up this weekend. Last weekend and the few days before it were very busy, as the Missouri Film Commission hosted an event Wednesday, June 30 for legislators and interested folks, so I went up to put in my 2¢ worth. Casey MacLaren, Cody Brown ( Megan and Floyd) and their teacher, Scott Arthur Allen, joined me for the Q&A and to make the pitch for more Missouri movies.

I spent the night at the home of dear friends Marsha and Marie and we talked really fast so everyone could get to bed on time.

Came home for dinner out with friends I don’t see nearly often enough, and back to Columbia for the opening at the Ragtag Cinema. This time I was joined by fellow Blackberry Winter musicians Dennis Crider and Linda Stoffel, and we did a short set before the movie. Then we tiptoed out and missed the first half of the movie so we could get dinner at Ragtag’s wonderful eatery before it closed. Excellent fare, then back to the movie and the Q&A. Drove back to Jeff for another overnight, this time joined by Kathleen and Sister Maggie, and a prolonged breakfast next morning where we laughed more than we ate, and we ate plenty. Good friends. There’s nothing like them.

Kathleen and I detoured over to Salem on the way home to catch their sesquicentennial celebrations, and I got home in time to catch the last of the housewarming party (and miss the work) at Mud Hollow.

An excellent time, but tiring.  Fireworks on the fourth, of course, but the grass at the airport was too dry and kept catching fire, so they weren’t able to finish them all. Oh, well. Even the short version was sweet.

Next week I’m off to Memphis for the Saturday night showing at the Ridgeway Four. Sunday there are two traveling exhibits as well as the usual fare at the National Civil Rights Museum. If you haven’t been, put it on your list. Extremely well done, and equally moving. If you think you remember everything about the ’60 and understand what happened, think again. Truly a life-altering experience.

Aug. 2 I’m off to Michigan for the 35th Michigan Womyn’s Festival outside Hart.  The lineup of performers looks delicious, and I’ll be doing workshops and peddling copies of the soundtrack, and catching up with old friends.

News Flash: The soundtrack release date will be announced

early next week!!!
