Winfield, Kansas

… aka Walnut Valley Festival. Looks like we will be there next September.  Take a look at the calendar for Blackberry Winter Band to see other (some tentative) tour dates.

Busy Before – HA!

Up early today trying to get organized. Two boxes off to the post office to be mailed home. It’s not so much stuff I’ve picked up while I’ve been out here, but deciding to send back most of the books I brought with me so my luggage will be easier to maneuver. Carrying books is the same as carrying processed logs, and weigh as much.

I’ve not taken into account the bread, cheese and assorted munches I’ll be carting along to sustain me through two nights and a day on the train, and the drive home from KC. Of course, the luggage will get lighter as I go along. Me, not so much.

I’ve had an extremely successful week since Oscar Sunday, visiting the on-line copyright office, establishing ASCAP membership, listening to a bunch of potential songs for the album, learning great things about songwriting from long-time friend and once-and-again collaborator, Robin Frederick, and meeting with new agent and record label folks to plan for what lies ahead. Now all I have to do is come home and make it all happen. Talk’s cheap, yes? And I thought I was busy before.

Just Another Review

It’s lovely to read about someone’s appreciation of Winter’s Bone and the soundtrack.

This from The Spectator Arts Blog; … “Folk music has always provided an outlet for singing through pain, celebrating the good times and knitting together a sense of shared life. The extraordinary Marideth Sisco’s music forms the heart of this collection. Fittingly for a film that trains a lens on the life of women in this rural world, her voice permeates the story. The success of both the film and its soundtrack seem to have thrown the ‘veteran journalist, teacher, author, musician, student of folklore…

Studio Time Ahead

I’ve spent the day stumbling, but stumbling productively, back at work on vetting songs for the next album.

Somewhere in the middle, I got confirmation on studio dates. We’ll be settling in with old friend Nick Sibley at his studio in Springfield, Mo. on April 7, with plans to be hanging around until about the 16th, tunefully productive. At least that’s the theory. But only if we have things solidly together as we go in. As the sister of a long-time pal once cross-stitched into a sampler, “All things cometh to she who waiteth, as long as she worketh like hell while she waiteth”.

Or as I reminded Jonathan earlier today, remember what the Buddhist monk said. “Before Oscars, chop wood and carry water. After Oscars, chop wood and carry water.”  … or was that Enlightenment. Oh, well…

Anyway, we’ll hit the studio with instruments in tune, voices well-oiled (ew … that didn’t quite create the image I intended) and with some REALLY good music in hand, and it’ll be ready for you right before we start out on tour. By the way — Don’t cancel any vacations or heart surgery on account of those tour dates we posted. They’re not set in stone. We’re trying to work some things around so people in the band who have previous commitments won’t have to cancel things other people are counting on. So just know we’ll be out there in early to mid-summer, ready to bring the music and musicians of the Ozarks to your neighborhood. And keep those suggestions coming of places to play. We’re trying to work them in as we can. And don’t touch that dial.  We’ll be back.

Back to Work!

Well, it appears I’ll be back at work sooner rather than later. Recording dates for the next album have been set, and we’re to hit the studio April 7 through the 17th, with an album release date in late May. That means I need to get hopping to finalize a tentative song list, and work out solid arrangements with my trusty band of miscreant musicians. But first there’s more creative scheming with longtime collaborator Robin Frederick and further meetings with record label execs while we’re all in the same vicinity of one another. It’s a good thing I scheduled some post-Oscar time here on the coast. Busy times. I head home on the train Friday with a notebook full of things to do, and the good memories of very special times with good friends in the rarefied air that is Southern California at Oscar time. See you soon.

Post Oscar

Well, we were O for 4 in wins. Fortunately, that was never what it was about. It was about telling a true story, even if we, and Daniel Woodrell, had to make it up. The Ozarks will forever be blessed, and made immortal, by this effort by a group of extraordinary writers, filmmakers and musicians who cared enough to get it right. Tonight we’ll savor the company of friends now snarling, spitting and averring  in their various voices that “We’ll be back!!”  And we will, in fact. In fact, the work on the next project is ongoing and gathering momentum. Thanks, thanks, incredibly heartfelt thanks to everyone who offered their support both for the soundtrack and the film. Bless you. And stay tuned. We’ll be back.

It’s Over

From left it's Jonathan Scheuer, Kate Dean, Debra Granik, and Michael McDonough.

There weren’t any wins for Winter’s Bone tonight – unless you call the four nominations wins. Sounds like a win to me.
