Ozark Gangsters! (via Moonmooring)

This post is really about Marideth’s presentation at the Harlin Museum last night. I didn’t see any gangsters in the audience. The Smithsonian “Journeys” exhibit has been well attended so far with 4 more weeks. Special presentations relating to journeys in and around the Ozarks are scheduled each weekend.

Ozark Gangsters! I usually check my and Marideth's blog every day to see what the stats tell me. It's nice to know what people are reading the most, how they got to your blog… from where, and what terms they used on search engines. This morning I was looking around the stats and my goodness, someone found MY blog by searching gangsters Ozark hills. And they found ME! I had a smile and a bit of a chuckle over that one. No offense to anyone okay! I have heard som … Read More

From “The Rabbit Room”

You’ll have to read all the way to the bottom to get to the part about Marideth; it’s a good piece to read.

“… the part of the movie that left me stunned, sitting speechless in my seat for several minutes after everyone else had left the theatre …” and “… Here, at the conclusion of the story, the choice of songs is Farther Along, an old gospel tune that, in light of what I had just seen, overwhelmed me. It gave me a richer appreciation for the story, and reminded me again of the hope of the Gospel, the promise that, one day, all things will be made new.”

Another Great Movie review!

They just keep getting better. Oscars here we come!

This just in from DifferentDrummer.cc

“… the bluegrass banjo, fiddle, and mandolin music that saturates the film rings as old and true … (as) the hills, especially the tunes sung at a birthday celebration by Ozarks folklorist Marideth Sisco. Many of the tunes can be traced to the British Isles and German(y), one song even dating back to 1590.”

“… glimpse into another world, as ancient and untouched as the Ozark Mountains that stand in the distance like grizzled elders. As corrupt and decayed as the broken blood bonds and rusting cars that litter the landscape like modern ruins. True and straight as the young girl who must defy its unyielding code.”

It’s A Book!

Woohoo!! My little hand-bound limited edition book of essays, These Ozark Hills , is hot off the press, in my hands and on its way out the door. I laid out the signatures this morning (Saturday), gathered them, signed, dated and numbered them (there will be a total of 250 copies) and mailed off the first orders. What  a rush. Most times when  someone’s work is published, it is in a decidedly hands-off process for the author. I wanted something of mine out there until the music arrives, and this is part of what I do – make stories, and tell them. This small volume (105 pages) contains the best of my radio series, plus a few longer pieces, and is bound by hand in the Japanese fashion. Here are some photos of the process, taken by Sarah Denton., who helped me invoice and pack the books for shipment.

Michfest and An Outfit for the Oscars

Michigan, as always, was a physical workout, as the performances, workshops etc. are scattered over 700 acres. But the music was divine, the shuttles were efficient, and the members of the legendary Lizard Clan offered up superb repasts morning and night, with mornings featuring perfect, endless bacon and grits, and evenings of steak, burgers, chicken and ribs with all the trimmings. All this and The Indigo Girls, Holly Near, Cris Williamson, Ferron and more. I didn’t have to sing a note, but I did anyway, every chance I got. Bought coffee from the Saints Collective, ice cream from the trail side vendor and experienced a brief episode of total insanity when I found a clothing maker in the crafts area who made raw silk into such exquisite art that I was compelled to order my outfitfor the Oscars. I’m not being presumptuous, really. It was just the only possible excuse I could come up with for spending that much (and nevermind how much) on a single outfit.

I musta been crazy! But who knows? I may get to wear it. Anyway, the whole thing was just too much fun for words. Saw many old friends and made some new ones. The workshop on Winter’s Bone was well received, and only one woman screamed “It’s You!” and fell at my feet. Embarrassing, yes, but pretty cool, also. Tulsa’s next, but Michigan will be a hard act to follow.

…time for mind-numbing movies, Not Winter’s Bone!

An open, nonjudgemental review of Winter’s Bone from EthicsDaily.com

“”Winter’s Bone” is one of the finest movies I have seen. It won the grand prize at the Sundance Film Festival and should be in consideration for the Oscars.”

“”Winter’s Bone” is the story of a teen who gives up everything for the sake of two little ones and a mama who knows no better. She suffers for the innocents that did not ask for this life but deserve a chance to live it.”
