WooHoo!

Good news of the WooHoo! kind. My first spoken-word CD is out. I’m driving to Springfield to fetch the first printing of “An Ozarks Holiday Sampler” – 15 episodes on holidays from my public radio series, “These Ozarks Hills.” It’s also available streaming live from www.ksmu.org. **Shameless self-promotion alert **  Order by Dec. 21 and we’ll get it to you by Christmas. It’s sometimes serious, sometimes fun takes on Groundhog day and April Fool’s day, among others. A couple might make you cry, but don’t worry. It’s good for you to get a little sappy, especially around the holidays. More to come.

Still reeling!

Still reeling – Got home from the October trip safe and sound, took a week to nap, read mail, pay bills etc., then as I was settling down to work again on current and future projects, got hit with two pieces of interesting news and then a dastardly cold that didn’t just smack me down and then let go, but took away my energy and voice, and hung on. It’s still hanging, for that matter, but has let loose enough so I can get some things accomplished.
First, the interesting news. Got an e-mail from an outfit in the UK wanting to license a song from the movie. Well, I sang it, but it wasn’t mine to license, so I sent them on to someone who could direct them to the right place.
Evidently the right place didn’t work out for them, so they came back and said, “Got anything else.” Well, heck, I had a whole album of else’s, so I sent them the Blackberry Winter CD, they passed it around for others to hear, and I haven’t heard a peep since. I’ll keep you posted.
Second interesting thing, I got a request to do a video audition for a part in an upcoming film due to be shot in NYC in February. Did the tape, haven’t heard a thing since. So lots of scurrying around at my house trying not to be overcome with anticipation over events that may never happen.

Long ago, in a village not very far away, there lived a family who produced a remarkable number of grocers and postmasters. I did not turn out to be one of them. I took after the other side of the family, more often peopled with auctioneer’s, sheriffs, elected officials and other show-offs. But I grew up in a grocery store and the post office next door. And some part of me always wanted one of my own. It’s finally happened. I’m opening my own little shop right here and selling my own hand or head-made products and shipping them from my own little P.O. (it’s actually a table, but close enough).

First off the line is a new holiday CD, not of music, but of the collected holiday episodes of my radio series, “These Ozarks Hills.” And it’s not just the holidays we’re now in the middle of. There’s Groundhog Day, April Fool’s Day, Equinoxes, Solstices and several versions of Halloween, Christmas and Thanksgiving. I think you’ll like it.

Also available are Blackberry Winter Band’s “In These Ozarks Hills” and the soundtrack from the movie, “Winter’s Bone.”

Coming soon is the book version of the entire radio series to date, from May, 2007 through December, 2011. In honor of the timeless Ozarks word describing stories real or made up as “Windies,” this complete text has been titled “The Windy Hills Collection.”

Come by and visit with me, won’t you? Set a spell. Tell me your stories of the Ozarks. And sample my wares.

It’s a wrap!

Ok, so I finally got home, the funeral was splendid, with an Apache helicopter flyover to celebrate Duane’s career as a genuine war hero, good times and connections with old friends, one of whom said she was prepared to hold me up if I faltered, as I was unable to contain my emotions before I was to sing. But I made it through, spent some time with folks I hadn’t seen in decades, and headed for Hutton Valley and my little farmette there on the edge of heaven.

It took about a week to recover from the strains of the trip, which was wonderful, but way different from sleeping in your own bed. Then I had to hit the ground running, cleaning up my notes from the trip, seeing to household chores, paying bills, and determining the current answer to a perennial question – “What’s next?”

Since then, I’ve made the corrections to the manuscript of my book of collected radio essays, which I hope will be out by January, re-recorded the audio version of the essays, assembled a collection of those that deal specifically with holidays – everything from Groundhog Day to Yule, with several between, and that CD will go on sale Dec. 1, entitled “An Ozarks Holiday Sampler.” I hope you like it.

Going South Once Again, to complete the circle.

Back with the folks at Still Rolling Productions, I took an evening to unwind and watch some vintage films with Jonathan (Blond Ice was a favorite) then got with Tory to download notes, audio and Flipcam footage shot after they left me in Atlanta. Next day at noon’ish, we held a catching up session with the whole crew and worked up a plan for what each of us might do next. All was well and I was all set to head back to DC on the morrow for more interviewing and browsing at George Washington U, when a phone call came from home. It was my cousin that I grew up with, Janice, calling to tell me her husband had been killed in an accident, and she would like me to sing at the funeral. Jonathan and I quickly juggled my schedule, cut the DC trip short by a day, and got a seat on a plane from DC to Branson, Mo, with a layover in Atlanta. Tedi picked me up at the airport and drove me to Cassville, where Janice and Duane lived, and I made it to the funeral with almost an hour to spare. I would have grieved to be anywhere else at that precious time of leave-taking. The next day, courtesy of Pat and Lois, I headed home.

Boston; Where are you!

I never made it to Boston. Got off at the near edge instead, wobbled my way up an escalator and down another and found friends Janelle and Charlie Shuster, who took me back to their home in Wellesley and fed me soup and good company. So much catching up to do after all those many years. Janele just catching her breath after 17 years at Harvard, and Charlie still slogging, but only at half-time and at projects he loves, at MIT. What an engaging pair they have become. I never knew Charlie before, but we’re pals now. We spent the weekend touring the gorgeous New England outdoors and eating splendid New England fare, while talking as fast as possible and on as many subjects as we could get to. Wonderful fun and too soon over. Caught the early train to NYC and reported in to the New York crew down on 11th Street.
