Excerpts from Costa Rica Journals: Chapter 2

Entering Costa Rica from the air is an experience that challenges description. First there are the clouds, massive cathedrals, alive, in an immense, many-layered landscape. No wonder, then, that the ancients decided that heaven, if it was anywhere, it was up here. From aloft, the view is of a snowy plain peopled by giants, the land of Michelin men and Pillsbury Doughboys.

Then the descent, through a floor that is wafer-thin, into rooms upon rooms of mist and vapor, each one thinly roofed and floored and thrust through with cumulus plumes. Through one, a rainbow arcs between vast cumulus-walled canyons. We turn until the sun is exactly right, somewhere above my right shoulder, throwing the shadow of the 757 before and below me and I suddenly see, embossed upon the layered clouds, the plane’s silhouette ringed in a golden circle of sunlight. The impossible image, framed by the sun’s aura, is copied in ever-smaller circles, spilling coins of sunlight upon all the layers of mist.

Lower we spin, buffeted by water-filled turbulence, as the landscape appears, first water, then surf and estuaries, then a crazy quilt of forest and farms and tall, steep-sided mountains. I wonder at the lack of snow, then I realize it is the tropics, and they are green all the way to the top.

The Davis Creek Rounders

The Rounders formed out of a long-time jam session held every Thursday for the past several years at the home of guitarist and retired biology professor Rick Cochran. Guitarist and Quill sports editor (now retired) Dennis Crider was a regular at these sessions, as was West Plains attorney Ken Wagoner, who had taken up guitar and shared their interest in old time music. I came aboard soon after Ken, who has an extraordinary memory in which he stores countless old songs, was becoming proficient on guitar. He has now taken up mandolin I started singing with them, often adding harmonies to Ken’s vocals. A few years later, Linda Stoffel stopped by in search of people doing music, and began adding a high harmony and occasional melody to the mix. Others have come and gone, but we five seemed to be a combination that stuck, and so we began performing in public, at first just at the Old Time Music Ozarks Heritage Festival, and then at other venues as requested. We are now putting together a CD of our favorite work, which will be offered here once it is completed.

Winter’s Bone News

Winter’s Bone personnel are running ragged to get to all the Spring Film Festivals in which they’ve been entered. Since the movie snagged the top prize at Sundance (Grand Juried Prize for best Dramatic Cinema) as well as a screenwriting award, momentum has been steadily building. The film was picked up for North American Distribution by Roadside Attractions, Inc., while European distribution will be handled by Fortissimo Films, Inc. The most continuous applause, however, is being reaped by singer  CONTACT _Con-3F647C661 \c \s \l Marideth Sisco, whose voice is featured at the beginning and end of the film, and who appears in a scene midway at a picking session. Go here to see a film clip on YouTube.

Marideth will represent the film at the SXSW (South-By-Southwest) Music and Film Festival in Austin, Tx. March 12 through 17, and also appear at the Kansas City Film Fest April 16-17. There is also some buzz about a possible musical appearance at a local club during the festival. Stay tuned.

Plans for an appearance at the Edinburgh Film Festival are on hold, as the event coincides with an appearance by Marideth and other Winter’s Bone musicians (including West Plains guitarist Dennis Crider, who also appeared in the film) at the Old Time Music Ozarks Heritage Festival on June 18. Festival goers there should also look for an appearance by Marideth and Dennis with their local band, the Davis Creek Rounders.

More news to come. Don’t touch that dial.
