GOOD HEAVENS! IT’S the end of June, and while the largest working part of my brain tells me that the garden rules over all other pursuits, it’s actually time to get moving on some other projects. Like the band. And Juneapple Records, (now in the studio with Linda Stoffel — stay tuned). Oh yeah, and songwriting. And the screenplay. And two or three other things I’m not quite ready to start blathering on about. So it’s no days off just yet. Too much and too many things to keep track of. And that’s not including the peaches that are ripening and need to be put up, the summer vegetables that are already overloading our plates, and the refrigerator that decided a 104-degree Friday before a holiday weekend was the perfect time to go on the fritz. I dare not ask what’s next for fear someone’s listening and I won’t like the answer. But really. It could be sooooo much worse. Truth is, I am blessed beyond measure. May I never relent in my thankfulness. And did I mention the outdoor room now under construction in my mind. But I digress.
SUMMER’S HEAT HAS set in, in earnest, and with it the quandary about how much and when to water, weed and tend to the equally unrelenting chores attached to keeping and growing a garden. I have recently found that, for me, the only workable solution seems to involve changing longstanding habits and sleep patterns. So much for my night owl ways, for the duration of the heat, if not for summer totally, I’ve reset my internal clock to wake me at 6 a.m. or thereabouts. Of course, you understand that “awake” is a relative term for a person who has heretofore acknowledged the reality of only one 6 o’clock, and that in the p.m. My ready-for-the-day routine is simple. Dog out, coffee water on, bathroom, mix 20-megaton coffee concoction, dog in, pour water into concoction, add enough milk to make it bearable, and out to the garden. Then it’s sip coffee, plan the morning, sip coffee, start south soaker hose, sip coffee, fix hose connection, sip…well, you get the idea. By about 8:30, the main chores are done, tomorrows chores have been ID’ed, and it’s time for a second cuppa joe. Life, even on hot summer days, is good if started right. And early.
“Today’s gardening started at 0600. With a forecast temp of 104 it seemed like the only possible time to get the work done. Six am is not a civil hour in my book – I do my best sleeping early in the morning while it’s cool, slightly breezy and the birds are singing morning lullabys. I fought the urge to slam my phone on the floor as it bellowed at me in the middle of a particularly pleasant morning dream. I was actually snuggled under a light cover savoring the fleeting coolness.
I heard “wake up” noises in the far side of the house. Someone wanted it to be known that I was close to being a slacker. So, there I was shortly after, actually working by 6:20 am today. And, am I ever glad I was. We spent 3+ hours out there harvesting, tidying up, watering the few things that need special attention, finishing the long term compost bin, and cleaning the vegetables that were picked.”

“M, I have always appreciated the variety of your expressions. Everyone should have an expressive face. Of course I always enjoy your music. Hell, I just enjoy you. I often think of your years at The Quill and savor the memories. There goes Marideth: Funny to curmudgeonly to grandmotherly to outraged in the time it takes to walk the length of the newsroom. Whatever her mood, get out of her way. I am enjoying your and Dennis’ success. You both are deserving. If I knew how and had your blessing I would post these on your blog. Alas, unless Dianne shows me how. . . Perhaps you will do it for yourself. It would at least show people how beastly hot it was. I was concerned for you. Thinking of blogs, I don’t know if you are aware that Claudia Dowling directed readers of her blog to yours with the advice to pay attention to your talk to the Cassville High alumni. I too was impressed. Best, f”
